Some thoughts about Fredericka's paintings
In viewing Frederica's painting I would encourage you to use them as inspiration to pay closer attention next time you see water in motion. If you closely observe each of these paintings of moving water, you will begin to recognize characteristic qualities of the particular location. Usually the qualities are regional, but they can also vary from stream to stream within the same region.
Can you see in the paintings that in some locations, water moves with well-defined ridges or ripples? That the water appears to have a stronger ability to hold a waveform in some areas and not others? Also note that some of the paintings capture a movement where the ridges are smaller and more numerous, while others appear to be more singular, well formed and more powerful. Still others portray languid qualities of movement where even when disturbed the water seems to lack the capacity to hold a distinct pattern at all.
Having viewed some of these paintings, you are encouraged to pay closer attention to the water moving in rivers, streams or bays near your location. What qualities does the water share with those in the paintings? Are there some characteristics that are different? It is always helpful and instructive to compare observations of moving water in one location with those in another location.

Artist's Statement
Like Michael D'Aleo's scientific work with water observation, I also perceive that image patterning gives the truth of water. Water does not describe itself, instead, it defines where it is, what kind of surface it rests on, what it carries, and how it is interacting with wind and sun. I am inspired to paint this communication in oils on canvas. Water, in its dance with light, is the basis of photosynthesis, creating all the energy that supports life, and allowing me to participate in the hydrological cycle. It is no wonder that reflections relax us and give us an experience of awe at our interconnectedness. The study of water's myriad forms and the way it takes reflections shows individuality in bodies of water that can be addressed by the visual imagination, and each painting challenges me anew.
